OpenLab Science — Privacy at a Glance

What we collect
Contact form: name, email address, message (only if you submit it). Answer-key requests: the teacher email you submit voluntarily. Usage analytics: page views and named interaction events (see below). Local storage in your browser: language preference, tutorial progress, your own saved scenes, and a random visitor identifier used to count unique visitors — all on-device.
Analytics and subprocessors
PostHog (no cookies, no session recording, no autocapture; events are configured in-memory, with one random browser identifier stored in local storage to count unique visitors). It receives page views and events like "lab started", "tutorial completed", "pack exported". No student-identifying data is sent. Infrastructure: Vercel (hosting, Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights). Web3Forms (contact-form delivery). The in-lab AI tutor has a free hosted mode and a bring-your-own-key mode (see "The in-lab AI tutor" below).
The in-lab AI tutor
The built-in AI tutor is free and needs no key. When a student asks a question, the question, the recent conversation, the current scene, and the latest measurements are sent to a third-party language-model provider to generate a Socratic, on-topic answer. To understand usage and improve quality, OpenLab stores the question text and a minimal scene summary (module and language only — no measurements, no identifying data) for up to 12 months; this is never sold or shared, and is deleted on request or at the end of the retention window. No student account or name is required; an anonymous per-device id (or the network IP address if none is sent) is used only to share the free quota fairly. The AI provider retains data under its own policy. A teacher or student may instead supply their own AI provider key. These requests also pass through the OpenLab server and are recorded the same way; OpenLab never stores the key itself. A teacher can turn the AI tutor off for an assignment; the student's lab then hides the AI panel and answers from the experiment's own guide.
Student accounts
None. Students use the lab with no account and no login. Everything a student produces (scenes, notebook entries, trials, exported evidence packs) stays in the browser on the student's own device. OpenLab never receives, stores, or processes student work. A teacher sees evidence only when a student deliberately exports the file and sends it through the school's own channel.
Retention and deletion
Contact-form and answer-key correspondence is retained as long as needed to respond. Analytics follows our providers' retention policies. On-device data can be cleared at any time through browser settings.
