Accessibility status
We are working toward an experience every student can use. This page states what has been tested, what is known to be incomplete, and the specific commitments we are making before broad teacher outreach — honestly, without claiming conformance we have not yet verified.
What we are committed to
Keyboard-completable core lesson path (Play, select an object, the Math tab, and guided steps). Captions or transcripts on any video a guided lesson links to. Visible focus throughout the lab. Readable contrast on live readouts when projected.
Status, per commitment (last evaluated 2026-09-19)
- 1. Keyboard-completable core lesson path — Delivered 2026-09-18 and extended 2026-09-19. Real keyboard-only walkthroughs complete one full guided lesson in each of the eight modules, including selecting a simulated object and opening the Math tab; Shift+Tab reversal and Escape handling are verified on the shared lab shell. Six modules needed a new keyboard-operable object list, added in this pass, so an object can be selected without the mouse.
- 2. Captions or transcripts on guided-lesson videos — Partially delivered. Our code guarantees captions on by default, matched to your interface language where a track exists, plus an always-visible in-app transcript of the lesson's own narration. Whether every linked video actually has a human-reviewed caption track is set on YouTube's side and cannot be verified from our own code.
- 3. Visible focus throughout the lab — Delivered 2026-09-18 and extended 2026-09-19, both themes (Dusk Blue and Academic Blue). Scripted checks walk 40 Tab stops on each of the eight module lab shells in each theme, and every stop reached shows a visible focus indicator.
- 4. Projector-readable contrast on readouts — Delivered 2026-09-18, for the two live-readout surfaces we found (the projector overlay strip and the canvas-drawn probe/timer text), both themes, at least 4.5:1 with several readouts clearing 7:1. No design colors changed to get there.
What has been tested so far
Automated axe-core accessibility scans (WCAG 2.1 A+AA rule tags) are set up to run in CI and were run for this evaluation, covering both empty and populated states across our six teacher-facing surfaces — including all 138 printable lab sheets, in both themes — with zero critical or serious findings at evaluation date. Scripted, real-keyboard walkthroughs (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Escape) verify a full guided lesson in each of the eight modules, focus trapping and Escape handling in the Notebook and lesson dialogs, and visible focus in both themes on all eight module lab shells. The walkthroughs cover one guided lesson per module, not every preset. We have NOT done a screen-reader pass, and we do not claim WCAG conformance or assistive-technology user testing.
Known limitations
No screen-reader user testing has been performed; every claim above rests on automated rules, scripted keyboard walkthroughs, and code review. The interactive simulation canvas is out of scope for automated checks, and some free-build drag interactions on the canvas have no keyboard equivalent. Keyboard and focus walkthroughs cover one guided lesson in each of the eight modules, not every preset. Captions are on by default on hosted videos, but some tracks are machine-generated rather than human-reviewed, and per-video caption quality cannot be verified from our own code.
The outreach gate
Before broad teacher outreach, we commit to resolving exactly these four items — and publishing the result here: 1. Keyboard-completable core lesson path. 2. Captions or transcripts on every video a guided lesson links to. 3. Visible focus throughout the lab shell. 4. Projector-readable contrast on readouts. Results as of 2026-09-18 are published in the status section above, and in full in the VPAT linked below.
